Monique Butler is chief medical officer of HCA Healthcare North Florida Division. Butler is responsible for clinical operations and care excellence of 15 hospitals, ensuring that every patient and every family receives the highest level of care possible. Butler previously served as chief medical officer for HCA Healthcare Continental Division’s Swedish Medical Center, a part of HCA’s HealthONE, where she promoted a mission-driven approach to patient care with a team of 2,000 colleagues, 500 volunteers and more than 1,400 physicians.

Under her leadership, Swedish accomplished a top percentile rank (throughout the HCA enterprise) for physician engagement and satisfaction. Her team was able to reduce hospital acquired infection rates by greater than 50 percent and produce a reduction in sepsis and overall mortality rates by 25 percent. Swedish Medical Center has earned many quality accolades, including consistent “A” safety grades from the Leapfrog Group, multiple awards from Healthgrades and recognition as an IBM/Watson Health Top medical center in the nation.

Prior to her role as chief medical officer of Swedish, Butler served as chief operating officer at Children’s Hospital of Michigan/Detroit Medical Center. Previously she held positions as the chief medical officer at Detroit Receiving Hospital and Sinai-Grace Hospital.

A recognized leader in her community, Butler was most recently chosen as a Women Who Soar honoree by the Northwest Douglas County Chamber. She was voted A Woman of Excellence in STEM careers in Michigan, recognized as one of Michigan Chronicle’s 40 under 40, and was identified in Becker’s Hospital Review as one of the 50 great African American leaders in healthcare to know in the nation. She is currently on the board of the City Year Denver, Rocky Mountain Children’s Hospital Foundation, Doctor’s Care and GlobalmindED.

A board-certified internist, Butler graduated from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and received her medical training at Wayne State University School of Medicine. She completed her residency training at the Detroit Medical Center, where she was chief medical resident of internal medicine, and president of the resident council at Sinai-Grace Hospital. Butler also completed an MBA in Haslam’s Physician Executive MBA program and holds a clinical assistant professorship appointment at Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. She is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives, the American College of Physicians and the American Medical Association.
