Computer Setup Instructions

The following steps guide you through the process of configuring your laptop computer for use on the University of Tennessee campus as well as for the Haslam College of Businesss graduate degree programs. Each step is required unless otherwise noted.

If you are using a company-owned laptop, please contact your IT department to discuss the necessary configuration below before you begin the setup process. They may want to complete the setup requirements for you. Please also note the user account you will utilize on the laptop must have administrative rights so that we can connect you to the UT network. You or your IT staff may contact us by email ( if further information is needed.

  1. Passwords: It is strongly recommended set up a password for the user account on your machine.
  2. System updates
    Install the most recent updates depending on your machine.
    1. Windows or Start—>All Programs—>Windows Update
    2. Mac—Apple menu—>Software Update
  3. Anti-virus Software
    If you currently have anti-virus application running on your system, either purchased or company-installed, skip this step. Otherwise, use the links below to download one of the UT approved applications:
    1. Windows
    2. Mac-ClamXav
  4. Spyware & Malware
    Windows (all applications have a free version available)
    1. Spybot
    2. Malwarebytes
  5. Microsoft Office
    All students are required to have Microsoft Office in order to complete assignments and projects. If you don't already have the software installed on your laptop, you may purchase Office from the UT Computer Store at discounted pricing. Please contact them by either visiting the store or calling +1 (865) 974-2930.
    1. Windows—Microsoft Office 2010 or 2013
    2. Mac—Microsoft Office 2008 or 2011
  6. Adobe Acrobat Reader
    Install the latest version of Acrobat Reader.
